Camp Details

This camp will select the women’s eight and quad to compete at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships scheduled for July 24-28 in Linz, Austria. The camp also plans to select the women’s pair, four and double to compete at Under 23 Trials June 23-26 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

General Plan:

The camp will start in Princeton, N.J. on June 5, 2013. Athletes are expected to arrive on June 4. The period from June 4-23 will be spent selecting the fastest combinations of athletes for the camp boats (eight and quad) and, depending on demonstrated speed, for trials boats (possibly pair, four and double). Trials boats will be named after the final race at Under 23 Trials. Camp boat selection can continue until July 10, although it could be finalized prior to that date. Cuts can be made at any time throughout the camp. The team will leave for the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships on July 19 and return on July 29 to Newark, N.J.

Anne Kakela – Camp Director and Head Sweep Coach
Josh Adam – Head Sculling Coach
Shawn Bagnall – Assistant Coach
Other coaches, still being determined, will help throughout the camp.

Athletes arrive on June 4. If you have a conflict due to your academic schedule, please note that in your RSVP along with your estimated arrival date. All athletes are responsible for travel to Princeton, N.J. Travel details are included below. As we get closer to the date, I will need your travel itinerary.

June 5: Camp starts at the Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J., with a meeting and practice at 7:00 a.m.
June 23-26: U23 Trials at Mercer Lake, N.J. The Trials boats will be named to the U23 Team based on results at U23 Trials.
July 10: Camp boat naming date although line-ups may be named earlier.
July 19: Selected team flies to Linz, Austria.
July 24-28: U23 World Championships in Linz, Austria.
July 29: Return to Newark, N.J. Arrive at approximately 12:35 p.m. Athletes are responsible for transportation home from the gateway airport.

In Princeton, athletes will stay in dorms at the Princeton Theological Seminary. No kitchens are available, but there will be access to microwave, coffee maker and small fridges. Food will generally not be covered for this portion of the camp, however, I am looking in to getting dinners starting in July when the cafeteria opens.

Athletes are responsible for their travel to Princeton, N.J. and from Newark, N.J. The closest airports to Princeton are Newark and Philadelphia. Both are about an hour drive. NJTransit (NJTransit.com) offers direct train service from the Newark Airport to either Princeton Junction or Princeton, N.J. for about $16.50. We will coordinate shuttling athletes from the train station to the dorms. During the camp, transportation will be coordinated among camp members who have vehicles.

The selection portion of the camp costs $2,000 and is due May 1, 2013 ($500 is a non-refundable deposit. If a person is sick or injured and cannot attend a single day of camp, $1,500 will be refunded. Once the camp has started, the fee, in its entirety, is non-refundable). The cost for the trip to 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships could be as high as $4,000, including airfare. We will coordinate a fundraising effort for the boats that qualify from this camp, and I will send out more details in a few weeks. The fee for the Europe trip will be collected after selection has been completed. Athletes are also responsible for transportation to Princeton, N.J., and the return from Newark, N.J. at the end of the camp.

NOTE: We do not want financial issues to keep qualified athletes from applying. If you have financial concerns or constraints about the camp or the trip to U23 World Championships, please include details in your RSVP. Also, NCAA rules allow school programs to cover athlete expenses through the selection phase of camp. It is worth checking with your coach to see if this could be an option for you.

The camp fee ($2,000) must be paid by check by May 1. Checks should be made out to “USRowing” and specify “Women’s U23 Camp – Athlete’s Name” on the memo line. The mailing address is:
