2012 Paralympic Games By the Numbers

Tonight’s opening ceremonies marked the beginning of the 2012 Paralympic Games. Competition in 160 events begins August 30, with 4,200 athletes expected to compete.
LONDON – Tonight’s opening ceremonies marked the beginning of the 2012 Paralympic Games. Competition in 160 events begins August 30, with 4,200 athletes expected to compete. Rowing begins August 31 at the Eton Dorney race course, just outside of London.

  • 3 United States crews competing for Paralympic medals
  • 23 total countries competing in rowing
  • 108 Paralympic rowers
  • 4 Paralympic boat classes – the arms and shoulders women's single sculls (ASW1x), the arms and shoulders men's single sculls (ASM1x), the trunk and arms mixed double sculls (TAMix2x) and the legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain (LTAMix4+).
  • 12 crews racing in each of the events
  • 48 boats total
  • 2 countries – Brazil and Ukraine qualified crews in each of the four Paralympic boat classes
  • 6 nations qualified three crews each
  • 8 top finishers qualified in each boat class at the 2011 World Rowing Championships
  • 2 top finishers qualified in each boat class at the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta
  • 2 entries in each event are invitational and have been allocated by the Bipartite Commission composed of representatives of FISA and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC)
  • 2002 was the year FISA made adaptive rowing part of the World Rowing Championship program
  • 2005 was the year the IPC announced the inclusion of rowing into the Paralympic Games
  • 2008 was the year of the first Paralympic Games for rowing
