  • USRowing to Host Largest Youth National Championships Ever

    Jun 09, 2016

PRINCETON, N.J. – Waiting to board a plane for New Jersey from the Tampa Airport, Sarasota Scullers team captain Marcel Griffeon sat quietly in the terminal. He was nervous, excited and ready to race. He was about to board a plane for the 2016 USRowing Youth National Championships hosted by the Princeton National Rowing Association on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

“I’m going to get to see a lot of the friends that I have made throughout my rowing career,”00_usrowing-youth-nationals_300pxsaid Griffeon. “It's going to be great to get to see everyone one last time, but I am most excited to race and see what we can do. We have been training really hard and we are ready to race.”

The senior from Pine View High School recently graduated as a National Merit Finalist, a National Hispanic Scholar, a USRowing Honor Roll Scholar and will attend the California Institute of Technology next year. After rowing for four years with the Sarasota Scullers, Griffeon will now add to his senior year accolades and compete for the first time at the Youth National Championships in the men’s youth quadruple sculls.

“We have a good shot to do well. We just really want to start racing.”

Griffeon and his competitors will be a part of the largest Youth National Championships ever held by USRowing. The event boasts 411 entries with more than 1,771 athletes competing for eighteen national titles. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Each year, this regatta seems to up the ante,” said Events Manager AJ Dominique. “Historic numbers, a packed schedule, both on and off of the water, and a location at the U.S. National Team’s home course really are setting up for a memorable experience.”

In total, 178 clubs from 30 states will compete at this year’s event. California is the most-represented state with 20 entries, followed closely by New York with 19. With nine total entries, Saugatuck Rowing Club from from Westport, Conn. boasts the most entries in the regatta.

For a list of qualified crews, click here. Results and heat sheets will be posted to the event page on USRowing's website here. Videos of racing will be available to view after the semifinals Saturday and after the finals on Sunday on USRowing's YouTube channel.

One of the highlights of the event, the USRowing Graduation Ceremony, will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 9, at the outdoor Mercer County Festival Grounds Amphitheater. An evening set to honor the graduating class of 2016, senior student-athletes will be honored in a 30-minute ceremony and receive a USRowing Certificate of Excellence. Alongside featured speaker Olympic men's eight stroke-seat Austin Hack (Old Lyme, Conn.) will be Scholastic Honor Roll Representatives from the Princeton National Rowing Association, Eileen Hu and Kathryn Miller.

In addition, USRowing will host an Olympic Day Meet and Greet on Sunday, June 12 from27333907935_503891626a_z 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the finish line tent. All are welcome to meet and greet Olympic athletes, pose for photos and get autographs. Fans will have a chance to meet the U.S. men's eight, fresh off its performance in Lucerne, Switzerland where the crew qualified for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

  • See you in Sarasota! Time for the SE Youth Championships!

Event Site | Park Site | HERENow

The 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships...The 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials... The 2017 World Rowing Championships... Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., is the site of some of the best racing in the country. A variety of rowing has happened on this course from learning how to row to learning you became an Olympian.

But as the 2016 USRowing Southeast Youth Championships gets nearer, USRowing has the insider tips to enjoying this race site to the fullest!

    1. Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! While some my be excited to be rid of those gnarly sock lines they have developed throughout the spring, not taking care of your skin in the intense Sarasota sun is a waste ticket to a sunburn.
    2. Got water? Remember that sun we were talking about a moment ago? Make sure to keep athletes and spectators hydrated with a big cooler with just water. It is eco-friendly and can be switched from water to gatorade easily enough!
    3. This is our last sun post we promise - don't forget to pack the extra tent if you can! The extra shade will be a blessing!
    4. Have room on the trailer for a bike? NBP is the perfect place to zip around from the startling to the finish line alongside your crew with miles of wide, paved bike trails. Extra points if you have your own basket and bell.
    5. Parents - are you the type that loves to hang in the hotel before your child's race. NBP offers plenty of comfortable sand right alongside the race course, so don't be shy. An early morning to get your chair in a good spot will mean drinking your coffee while watching a beautiful Florida sunrise - which we think is worth it!
    6. Forget something? Don't fret! There are plenty of shops with anything you could possibly need right down the road.

  • Coast to Coast! Youth Regional Championships Kick-Off this Weekend around the Country!

    May 05, 2016
As clouds begin to cover the East Coast, breezes start to pick up in mid-America and rain falls in California, junior crews from around the country are preparing for their opportunity to compete in coveted USRowing Youth National Championships.

With all of the different variables that can influence a regatta - we sought out advice from the best, as our three regatta directors weighed in on their upcoming weekends.

    USRowing Southwest Youth Regional Championships

Weather | Event Page | Livestream link | HEREnow Results

    Regatta Director: Paul Wilkins

“The southwest youth championship is the largest single USRowing regatta. The numbers don’t lie and here they are…
    • 2,050 participants

    • 598 boats competing

    • 36 events

The top-three crews to watch-out for are Oaklands Strokes, the defending National Youth Champions in the men’s varsity eight. Newport Aquatic Center, who was second at nationals last year and Marin who were fourth. Making a push to get into the top group will be San Diego Rowing Club.

Among the women, Marin looks strong this year in the eight while Marina Aquatic Center and Newport Aquatic Center are favored to have podium finishes.

The venue is the top racing venue of the west, beautiful Lake Natoma in Gold River, California. The folks are the California State Sacramento Aquatic Center do a great job at the LOC. The state park is lovely and sometimes we even have wild turkeys visiting the boat trailers, so watch out!”

    USRowing Central Youth Regional Championships

Weather | Event Page | OKC Festivities | HEREnow Results

    Regatta Director: A.J. Dominique

“This year's event is surrounded by excitement. The attendance is higher than last year, and we're using a new time trial format that should improve the fairness of the competition.

Off-the-water, there will be extra buzz with the Grand Opening of the new WhiteWater Center, Olympic Trials, and the Road to Rio Tour all occurring at the same time. It's shaping up to be a great weekend.

OKC Riversport traditionally wins the team trophy at this event, and looks to be a strong contender again this year. We are also welcoming a new program, RowAmerica North Little Rock, to the competition as the lone representative from the state of Arkansas. We are also happy to see that Tulsa Youth Rowing Association was able to bring 27 entries after suffering an arson at their boathouse earlier this year.

The Boathouse District is great for watching races. Come inside, even for a little while, and explore the facility. It's unique among rowing facilities in the country. The morning racing will be different. Time trials are not the most exciting spectator experience, but the crews are fighting for seeding and positioning in the afternoon's finals, so they will be giving their all. There's no way for them to know how the other crews are doing, so they have to go all out.

Finally, be sure to plan on a different spectator parking plan, as the number of activities occurring at the venue will fill up the usual lots. Shuttles will be available, but plan on giving yourself extra time.”

    Regatta Director: James Rawson

“Lake Mercer will be full of excitement this weekend and much busier than past participants have ever seen it, as registration is up over 40% this year. This regatta has a schedule that is bursting at the seems with racing from sun up to sun down. Continual racing and more athletes than we have ever had at this event will be sure to keep spectators on their toes.

The best advice I can give is to have a feeling for where everything is. With 50 programs in attendance, knowing your way around will be important.

The most significant thing athletes can take away from the weekend will be that it gives them the opportunity to race on the lake which will eventually be the stage for this year’s youth national championships.”
