2016 Olympic & Paralympic Hopeful Fact Sheet


Rule 40

A note to athletes who may have their own sponsor: All non-USOC advertisers that wish to continue in-market generic advertising campaigns that feature a Rio Olympian or Paralympian through the Games period must submit their campaigns and initial tactics for review through the Athlete Advertising Waiver System. The deadline to submit this waiver is January 27th, 2016. Athletes who are featured in an unapproved campaign may risk their eligibility to participate in the Rio Games. 

Rule 50

Please note that the venues for all Olympic and Paralympic Trials will be 'clean venues', abiding by the IOC's Rule 50. Listed below are some guidelines that all athletes and coaches participating in Trials should consider– for full guidelines, please see the document attached. 

  1. Boat names may not be used.  

  2. For any clothing/equipment used on venue, the identification of the manufacturer shall not appear more than once per item, and must meet the attached sizing requirements. 

  3. No form of publicity or propaganda, commercial or otherwise, may appear on any article of clothing or equipment whatsoever worn or used by the athletes or other participants on venue. 

    With the exception of standard manufacturers' equipment identification permitted by Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter (or the manufacturers’ equipment identification permitted by the NGB’s International Federation’s rules, if applicable), the equipment, uniforms and the bibs/numbers of the competitors and officials at the Trials and Exhibitions may not bear any commercial identification or promotional material of any kind (whether commercial or noncommercial).

     Competitor uniforms may bear the name/logo of his or her Rowing club, provided the club is a registered member and in good standing with USRowing (as of January 1, 2016) and has been approved by the USOC.

Games Registration

Please note: This Games Registration only applies to the Olympic Games. Paralympic Games Registration will be published on this webpage shortly. 

The USOC requires any athlete who hopes to participate in Olympic Selection, and coaches of athletes participating in Selection, must add themselves to the USOC Long List. The deadline has passed to add yourself to the Long List. 

Athletes or coaches who do not complete the Games Registration by the deadline below will not be eligible for selection to the 2016 Olympic Team. 

  1. Individuals who added their name to the Long List will receive registration instructions via email from the USOC. If you do not receive your email by February 16th, you must contact Liz Soutter at liz@usrowing.org.

  2. Individuals must log into the portal and complete the Games Registration prior to March 2nd, 2016 in order to be eligible for the Olympic Games. 

  3. This registration requires submitting a scanned copy of your U.S. passport, valid through December 31st, 2016. Please start the renewal process as soon as possible if your passport does not meet this requirement for travel to Brazil.

  4. Prospective coaches and staff will be required to complete a background check. The USOC will provide instructions on this process.

The deadline to complete the Games registration is March 2nd, 2016. Athletes and staff who miss these deadlines will not be eligible to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Para Classification

A USA Sport Classification is needed prior to any Paralympic trials or selection camp date (coxswains excluded). The current USA Classification Master List at can be found on the USRowing Classification Page

To compete at the Paralympic Games, athletes must have been classified by a FISA Classification Panel and have been issued either a ‘Confirmed’ sport class status or a ‘Review’ sport class status with a review date after 31 December 2016 on the FISA Master Classification list (coxswains excluded).

Reminder to Check your Meds!

All athletes should be reminded about the importance of checking the medications/substances they are taking against the GlobalDRO to be sure that they are in line with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2016 Prohibited Substances/Methods List, which came into effect on January 1.

    Paralympic Eligibility

    Please note that athletes must have competed in at least one official FISA competition between January 1st, 2014 and June 30th, 2016 in order to be eligible for the Paralympics.  If you have not competed in a FISA competition after January 1, 2014, and you hope to qualify for the Paralympic Games, you will need to compete at a FISA event this spring.  The options for competition are:

    • Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta, Gavirate, Italy on April 20-22, 2016 (TAMix2X only)
    • Gavirate International Regatta, Gavirate, Italy on April 22-24 (all para-rowing boats)
    • World Cup II in Poznan, Poland on June 16-19 (all para-rowing boats)

    USADA Compliance

    Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls are no longer required to be in the Registered Testing Pool 12 months prior to the Games (as has been the case for previous Games). USRowing, FISA, or USADA may choose to add you to the Registered Testing Pool, however this has no impact on selection. 

    All athletes must be USADA compliant at all USRowing, FISA, and IOC/IPC events. Among other things, this means that athletes should be sure to check their medications against the Banned Substances List.     Paralympic Games Registration

    ECG & Health Screening

    All Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls must complete the USRowing Pre-Competition Health Screening (consisting of an ECG and Physical) prior to selection. Please note that some requirements have been updated from 2015 for 2016. For full details on deadlines and requirements, please click HERE

    Vaccination Recommendations

    All Olympic and Paralympic hopeful athletes and coaches are encouraged to follow the USRowing Medical Committee's vaccination recommendations. Athletes are encouraged to get any vaccinations as soon as possible.
