National Learn to Row Day on June 4 is the opportunity to introduce your boathouse to the local community. Organize a learn-to-row event, host an open house, or put on an erg/swim/run event. Whatever you choose, let people know about it!
In an Olympic year, interest in our beloved sport is at an all-time high. Make the most of it!

National Learn to Row Day on June 4 is the opportunity to introduce your boathouse to the local community. Organize a learn-to-row event, host an open house, or put on an erg/swim/run event. Whatever you choose, let people know about it.

Here is a checklist to get you started:

Early April

  • Hold a club meeting to get everyone on board; make a plan.
  • Register your event at regattacentral.com.
  • Assign roles. Designate someone who will handle press relations, a person to respond to attendees, etc.
  • Determine who will answer general questions concerning the event. This may be your point person for any potential interviews, so find a club member who is personable and articulate!
  • Create an event page on Facebook to garner interest, and encourage your club members to share the event on their own pages. If your community has a Facebook page, share your event on that page as well.

Mid-April

  • Contact local newspapers, TV and radio stations, and tell them about your event.
  • Pitch a local story about National Learn to Row Day. Click here to download a sample press release.
  • Ask about closing dates for weekly events calendars in both the local and sports sections. If you have regatta pictures, send them to the press and include captions.
  • Let the press know who your designated “media contact” is and how folks should contact him or her if they’d like to attend.
  • Highlight the achievements of your club members - big and small - through your social media platforms, sharing or re-tweeting old photos of past events and encouraging club members to do the same.

May

  • Post flyers around the club, neighborhood, grocery store and local health clubs. Start talking up your event!
  • Post reminders on your Facebook event page with an event schedule and other pertinent information for your event.

June - #NLTRD is June 4th!

  • Are there any week-of changes or alerts to the event that need to be made? If weather looks like it could be a factor, make sure to notify participants, club volunteers and press on your website and social media platforms.

 Day of the Event

  • Designate a person(s) to document the day. Whether it is taking photos for a Facebook album or spending the day recording videos through Snapchat, find an interesting way of letting people know how your club spent the day!
  • Post about your event online using #NLTRD
  • Send interesting photos and videos of your event to USRowing at media@usrowing.org.
