Williams College Moves Up to One While Brown and Barry Hold First in Week Eight Polls

The regular season polling is finished and the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships are set to begin, but with one change in the poll standings from last week as Division III Williams College defeated Bates College Sunday and moved to the top. Here is week eight USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I, II and III Polls, presented by Pocock Racing Shells.
PRINCETON, N.J. – The regular season polling is finished and the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships are set to begin, but with one change in the poll standings from last week as Division III Williams College defeated Bates College on Sunday and moved to the top. Here is week eight of the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I, II and III Polls, presented by Pocock Racing Shells.

Brown University held number one in the Division I poll and Barry University stayed put at the top in Division II.

In DIII action, Williams’ varsity eight defeated the Bates first and third varsity eights andW_V1_Spring_2015_purple_shirts_618_420_[1] copy won the New England Small College Athletic Conference title at the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Williams earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, May 27-28 at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif.

The Bobcats will also be there to defend the first NCAA title in school history and make a 10th-consecutive appearance after receiving an at-large invitation.

Williams was the 2016 favorite in pre-season polling, but Bates took the top spot in week three and stayed there the next four weeks. Despite two first-place votes this week, Bates fell to second, while Williams moved up from number three with eight first-place votes.

Wesleyan University finished third. Ithaca College and Wellesley College rounded out the top five.
 
"Williams women's crew has been on a slow burn this whole year," said head coach Kate Maloney. "Starting with their renewed training and competitive ethic in the fall, through a great winter season of self-directed training and a steady improvement through the spring, I am very pleased with the direction of this team for the remainder of this year and for the upcoming years."

The University of California earned 12 first-place votes and inched closer to Brown in the polling but remained back in second by two points. The Ohio State University finished third and had four first-place votes. The University of Washington was fourth with one first-place vote and the University of Virginia was fifth.

DI conference championships are scheduled to begin this weekend.

In DII, Barry University will head to Philadelphia for the Dad Vail Regatta as number one in that poll. Barry has led the top of the poll since the pre-season voting and claimed all five first-place votes again this week.

The University of Central Oklahoma was second and Nova Southeastern University was third. Western Washington University and Mercyhurst University finished the polling tied for fourth.
