PRINCETON, N.J. -- Regarded as one of the most well-known and prestigious regattas, the 2016 Henley Royal Regatta (HRR) will be held June 29 through July 3 on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames, England. This year, the 2016 HRR has received a record number of entries, at 629 crews, eclipsing the previous record of 552 set in 1998.

International entries have also surpassed previous years with 165 crews from 27spectators_afloat3 copy nations entered for this year’s regatta. Out of those, 52 crews will be representing the United States from 31 different rowing clubs and universities.

The Henley Royal Regatta has been a showcase of the English social season since its inaugural year in 1839. The regatta has been in production for so long, it has its own rules and regulations, and is not subject to other rowing governing bodies such as British Rowing or the International Rowing Federation (FISA).

With 20 total events, nearly 90 races will be held on the first and second days of racing, with races beginning every five minutes.

The duel-style races on the famous one-mile, 550-yard-long course (which translates to 2,112 meters) will be seen by hundreds of thousands of spectators who line the river bank. For those who cannot view the races in person, they will be live-streamed around the world on the event’s official Youtube channel.

While American crews only represent a small portion of the competition at Henley, the U.S.A routinely performs well. Among the crews competing will be 11 American universities.

Fresh off of a men’s team victory at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, the University of California is entered in the Visitors’, Temple, Ladies’ and Diamond Cup. In 2015, the Golden Bears claimed one of the coveted trophies from the varsity men’s four category with a first place finish in the Visitors’ Challenge Plate.

University of Michigan men’s A and B eight will be competing after victories at the American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship, and have been taking training very seriously in order to have a strong showing in the Temple Cup.

“Continuing the training grind after the end of the regular season is always challenging to get going again,” said University of Michigan head coach Gregg Hartstuff. “After a few practices, the reality that you are facing some of the best competition in the world makes it mentally easier to get back into the rhythm.”

In the Grand Challenge Cup, the New York Athletic Club will be facing the Rio-bound Dutch crew as well as Team Italy in a fight for coveted cup.

A USRowing Training Center - Princeton eight will compete in the Remenham Challenge against seven other crews. The line-up of women include Kendall Schmidt, Heidi Robbins, Vicky Opitz, Olivia Coffey, Emily Huelskamp, Coco Schoeller, Erin Boxberger, Molly Bruggeman and Kristine O'Brien.
