Celebrating Excellence in Rowing: USRowing Announces 2015 Fan’s Choice Award Winners

Soon after the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta came to a close on Sunday evening, so did the polls to the rowing community's favorite awards: the Fan's Choice Awards. USRowing is now proud to announce the four athletes and three coaches who have been chosen by their peers to represent this year's class of award winners.
PRINCETON, N.J. –– Soon after the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta came to a closeUntitled-1 on Sunday evening, so did the polls to the rowing community's favorite awards: the Fan's Choice Awards. USRowing is now proud to announce the four athletes and three coaches who have been chosen by their peers to represent this year's class of award winners. 

USRowing’s Fan’s Choice Awards embodies excellence in rowing by showcasing top performances over the current year. These seven winners were nominated by and voted for based on their contributions to the sport and achievements on the water. All will be honored at the fifth-annual Golden Oars Awards Dinner on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

Clark Dean, Sarasota Crew
This past summer, Clark took home gold in both the U17 single and quadruple sculls at the 2015 Royal Canadian Henley. At the 2015 USRowing Club National Championships, Clark would go on to take the top spot in the U17 single and quadruple sculls as well as the eight to go along with his silver medal in the U19 quadruple sculls. At the 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships, Clark was a part of the varsity eight that took the top spot in B Final.

Nate Goodman, Yale University

As stroke seat of one of Yale's most successful varsity eights since 1982, Goodman has led the Yale crew to a near perfect 2015 season with victories in all but one semifinal race. Goodman and the Bulldogs would go on to win the Eastern Sprints, the Sexton Cup (in a record time), The Ladies Challenge Plate at the 2015 Henley Royal Regatta and an exciting petite final win at the 2015 IRA Championships.

Greg Gillinger, Potomac Boat Club

After taking silver in the B four with coxswain alongside members of the U.S. Veterans Rowing Club at the 2015 Henley Masters Regatta, Gillinger would go on to take gold in all six of his races at the USRowing Masters National Championships. Gillinger's six gold medals contributed to Potomac Boat Club's men's points trophy. Potomac also finished third in the race for the overall points trophy. 

SchmetterlingNational Team Athlete of the Year
Lauren Schmetterling, U.S. National Team
A three-time national team member and three-time world champion, Schmetterling sat in four seat of the U.S. women's eight that brought home the crew's 10th consecutive World/Olympic Championship at this year's World Rowing Championships. Top finishes in the eight and four at the 2015 World Rowing Cup II in June rounded out Schmetterling’s gold standard year.

Brian de Regt, Oakland Strokes
Many will recall the iconic photo of 2015 as stroke seat of the Oakland Stroke's junior men's eight stood in triumph after the young men claimed the club's first victory in that race at the 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships under de Regt's first year at the helm of the program. De Regt was also named the U.S. Junior Boy's High Performance Sculling Coach this year.

Collegiate Coach of the Year
Chuck Crawford, University of Delaware
Chuck-Crawford2 copyFor the first time in program history, Crawford led his lightweight first and second varsity lightweight eights to victories over Harvard University earlier this year. The Blue Hens also took home gold in several races at this year's Dad Vail Regatta. The year turned out to be a busy one for Crawford, who also coached six current and former UD athletes that went on to compete at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and the 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

Mark Borchelt, Texas Rowing Center
As head coach of the masters program at Texas Rowing Center, Borchelt would lead his rowers to victories at the Heart of the Texas Regatta, the Texas State Championships and 27 total medals (10 gold) at the 2015 USRowing Masters National Championships for a seventh-place finish overall in the total points competition.
